Having a debate with a colleague about fire risk assessments and whether they should cover the external route to the assembly point. Would appreciate your thoughts. Also I have asked for clarification on a number of areas such as storage in escape routes from a new fire risk assessor and my colleague is saying that they will not pass these on because the assessor is independant - thoughts?

Thank you in advance

Yes you should cover both internal and external, you might have trip hazards, grss could grow and stop the door opening, you could have a fenced area that might need an auto release on the gate or you will be trapped. Consider if your assembly point is on the route the emergency services could take, is the lighting good enough, all sorts of things need to be taken into account. Even to the point of a secondry point in case you need to move further away.

The external aspect of the escape route is an integral aspect of the FRA and part of the common area in my opinion, particularly if it involves a complex or potentially hazardous route.

Escape routes should be clear of obstructions, well lit and with adequate signage. Why a FRA person would not want to provide this detail is beyond me.

Thank you for confirming my opinion - now to have an assertive discussion with FM
