The Society for Radiological Protection has organised a one day meeting on Laboratory Design on 7th November 2017, in the Francis Crick Institute in London.

Who thought that was a good idea?! Laboratory design in new and refurbishment projects, including common radiation protection issues.

In the context of working with ionising radiations, this event explores the complexities of laboratory design, whether new builds or refurbishments, and the pitfalls that can trap the unwary.  If you are likely to become involved in laboratory design to some extent (or suspect you might be) this event aims to help you. It does this by drawing on the experiences of people from different perspectives who have been involved in laboratory design recently. This event may also be useful to RPAs who are asked for advice on RP issues in new laboratory designs.

Having plenty of experience of laboratories designed by external consultants, lots of things can go wrong.

No the worst labs are those that recreate an academic’s first love affair with science so they are:

  1. 20 years out of date
  2. Wrong equipment in the wrong place
  3. Too big or too small for what you actually want ( as oppose to remember from  your youth)
  4. Made using items that are no longer in production and so are impossible to replace, repair or acquire if you want change lab use.

Had this been advertised on HASNET or ISTR? That might be a more suitable forum for this.
