Hello,

Im having a disagreement with our Transport Manager and wanted some advice. I believe that loading onto a fully raised tail lift by a fork truck is bad practice (its under slung type). Reasons being it can affect the payload if the weight of the forks go onto the tail lift, can also increase falling objects from height if the pallet (plastic type) is dragged back by forks. Bad practices on this site mean people are stood next to tail lift. I suggested that they either load straight into HGV or it gets loaded by pump truck by going up and down on tail lift but he said they will not change their way of working and that I am wrong.

Is there any industry guidance on this?

So they have derived a system using motorised aids (FLT's) straight on to a platform and you want them to manually move the load with mechanical aids and repeated operation of the tail lift?

They have set up a system that saves time (no waiting for the tail to raise and lower), eliminates manual handling pulling/pushing a pallet truck onto/from the tail and possible falls from height (if the operator rides the lift to ensure the pallet truck does not roll off), eliminates emissions (vehicle engine can be off and does not require running to power the lift - better still the loader can hold the keys to ensure the vehicle is not moved throughout the activity)

My only push with the transport manager would be to designate a no-pedestrian zone during the operation

I can't understand why someone would load onto a raised tail lift when you can load straight onto the back of a trailer. You are risking the tail lift being damaged doing it this way. The only reason I can think off is that the tail lift allows for more space to the turn the pallets around with a Pump Truck when loading the last few pallets (normally you would push the last ones on with the FLT). I would simply ask why they do it this way and what benift they belive they are gaining from it?
