I've been a manager for a number of years and am now heading towards a 'Group Head of' position; I have often held interim postions covering for directors regarding SHE at board level etc. but am now heading to a full-time senior position.
I've been in this profession for just over 20 years and at times questioned the reason why I have persisted? other than I absolutely love it! you have to do this for the love of it because at times you (sic) are thrust into situations of huge frustration and bewilderment.
It's interesting that a very recent (within the last year) piece of advice, provided by a director, was to 'understand your shelf-life, when you realise you're not moving in the right direction, move on' he was absolutely right. When my kids were younger I didn't have the option (or I didn't believe I did) to move to chase a career, I simply worked to feed and clothe them and to pay the Abbey National their monthly interest fee for the roof under which I was living.
In recent times I have concentrated on moving from a position of learning (all of the exams, training courses et al) to a position of putting into place the lessons I have learnt from experience within various industries; 'coaching' rather than 'telling', not preaching (we tend to do that in our earlier days within this profession) but listening and understanding the POV of the person you are trying to help and the absolute importance of recruiting the right people. If you recruit the right people, surround yourself with positive, emapthetic and sensible people you will go far.
Anyway..... onwards
Keep going, keep learning, care....

What a brilliant post describing what it is like to mature into your profession. I have been in health and safety since 1977 if you include 3 years at Aston University and I have seen lots of things change. Some have left me at a total loss and asking the question WHY??? (I have a hit list of useless H&S legislation) and some have had me cheering from the rafters "AT LAST!!!" The one thing I have learned over all that time is that every day is a school day and you never stop learning but you do use what you learn in different ways. Keep the faith folks and we will rule the world one day, perhaps not during my time but in times to come.
