New trend apparently: people go for a jog and get multi-coloured powders thrown at them. See attached You Tube video- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG_-o5AfXfM

This has generated some comments on the University H&S officer’s forum and I thought others might like to think about it too. Two issues so far:

  • What’s in the powders- most don’t seem to have any sort SDS and of course some people might be allergic to them

and

So when someone suggests that your company set up one of these events over the summer you know what questions to ask.

If they are imported powders what about the possible contaminants - asbestos, RCS... Can't just assume the general dust WEL

The colours look like the colours you can get for chalk lines, so could be chalk ? I’m sure I have seen that shade of blue, pink and yellow at least. I remember looking into chalk lines in the distant past and found what we were buying was food grade!

Are they really going to inhale enough to be a real issue and self-inflicted, let em get on with it in my view! Note there were people with what looked like push chairs! Probably breath in worse al November 5th bonfire.

Thanks to the OP for bringing this to the forums attention – it’s a useful reminder. I remember the Tiawan incident, it was shocking. For people who want more information the event was captured live and available on utube. I do not wish to post the direct link as it could be upsetting to some people.

I am led to believe that the powder is cornstarch that has food coloring in it. Cornstarch like any flowery product is explosive/flammable.

Isn't there a festival somewhere in India too where they throw coloured powder like that at each other?  It isn't something I would fancy doing but then there is no accounting for taste.  It would have to be done as a properly organised and planned event with appropriate controls in place and not just done as a free for all or you could well end up with another incident like Taiwan.

The one question that occurs to me is this - why? Why is powder being thrown at people, seems a bit stupid to me. If someone threw powder at me, I'd view as a form of assault, and of course I am entitled to defend myself, so they would need to factor in personal injury to the throwers in the risk assessment.

I have taken part in a few of these events and can say that they are great fun!  never felt the need to threaten physical assault on anyone ;)

As another poster answered, it is cornstarch that has been dyed.  I went to one with an asthmatic person who fashioned a 'buff' to wear over her mouth to stop it affecting her breathing which worked well.  I didnt wear anything like that and was fine although i did have multi coloure dbogies for a day or so :)

Was the 'buff' face fit tested ?

PS why can't people just buy a flag and pin it  in their lapels any more?
