No to me this is a common sence answer but it will mean asking someone to do something and I know what the excuse not to do it will be.........

So, we have a large factory and we are currently recuriting more fire wardens to be trained but as usual people are happy to moan about the problem but not be the solution to the problem. In the meantime I would like to ask people to test the fire panel and take role calls.

Now I believe that to do either you do not need to be a trained fire warden, would you agree? Its basically pushing the sequence on the main panel once a week after all and doing a role call is ticking off a register as and when we have a drill or alarm.

I'd be interested in your thoughts please.

No you don't needto be a trained fire warden, just need to know what the procedure is if it connects direct to the Fire station etc.

WE have our maintanance team complete ours and none are trained as wardens, if they find a fault they either contact the contractor direct or the manager of the area, and then log in the fire log.

No you don't need to be a fire warden to take a roll call or test the alarm.  You just need to know what you are doing.  When it comes to alarm testing though make sure you are testing each call point in rotation and not just testing the alarm panel every time. So it takes two people - one at the call point and one at the alarm panel and obviously if it is a monitored system you need to let the monitoring station know you are coming off cover for 30mins to test the alarms and then ring them back when you want to go back on cover.

Also do not forget you will need to check any systems (security over rides on doors, automatic shutters, hold back devices on fire doors etc) activated by your alarm system when the manual call point is activated.

Yes, we need to get this in place however at the moment we don't know where all the call points are! (changeof personnel, cany of use of areas etc.) Fire people coming back in to sort it out but we basiaclly have nothing being done at the moment and I just need to get something in place until the fire survey is done and we can start the call point checking also.

Thanks all.

What you need is not fire marshals or wardens or whatever but management that understand their responsibilities for fire safety.   They need to understand if you have a situation where nobody knows anything and they are just waiting for someone to be trained as a fire warden then you have a situation where people might die if there is a fire.

They are almost certainly also in breach of the Fire Safety Order.
