Following a potentially fatal incident on a project we were involved with but cleared of any blame.

(The IP made a full recovery within minutes)

The client , a Facilities Management Company has decided to come in and audit our company against ISO Standards. We are not ISO Accredited , but use ISO standards as a benchmark and best practice.

Can this company do this ?

The client has the right to ask if they can audit your business to any standard they want.

You don't have to allow them to do this unless there is something in your contract with them that says you do but actually, they don't have to renew their contract with you either.

The thing with external audits though is they are an excellent way of finding ways to improve your business because the auditor is looking at things from a different perspective.

Think of it as an oportunity rather than an imposition.

Yes of course they can audit you as a subcontractor / supplier.  If they have a good audit team and a good audit method you might pick up some useful tips. Every day is a school day so think of it as an opportunity to pick people's brains, free consultancy doesn't drop into your lap often.  Grab it while you can!

You don't have to let them audit you, but then they don't have to keep you on as a supplier.

I welcome this type of audit.  It brings a fresh perspective and supporting it shows your client that you are not hiding anything and are willing to improve.

But you do have to keep control of what actions you choose to take following the audit.  It's for them to tell you what could be improved, but for you to decide if and how.

As others have mentioned, the audit may really benefit your company. Whilst you may not have OHSAS 18001 (soon to be ISO 45001) or ISO 14001:2015 it is a great tool to audit against as I believe it provides a great baseline for Health and Safety/Environmental management/arrangements. You may already be compliant with the standards whilst not formally being certified  - it would be worthwhile (if you are unfamiliar with the standards) to have a quick skim through prior to the audit.

I have a simple OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001:2015 audit checklist, if you would like me to send it to you? If so, PM me your email.

Well done, did they give you any pointers for the 8% they were not happy with? Also, did they make note of things that can be of benefit to them? This is how good audits usually work.

Great news - with such a good audit score hopefully you will be awarded more work by this client.

Opportunity!!! where have I heard that before? Oh yes ISO stansards, ummmm I wonder if you might want to consider getting accredited instead of playing at it? If you use it as best practice anyway, go for it! show you are serious as an organisation!!!!
