I have an expectant mother that has just returned to work after a suspected Mini Stroke/ TIA. After a back to work interview it was suggested that she had more time of work to recover. According to DVLA you should not drive for a minimum of one month after this type of illness and then should be reassessed for fitness to drive. She commutes for 2 hours in total every day by car.

My recommendations were.

  • She was collected from work and did not drive until certified fit.
  • She consulted with her doctors/ consultant for a confirmed diagnosis of her illness.
  • not to return to work until doctor says she is fit to work.
  • And returns on a phased return to work.
  • Occupational health assessment to be done prior to retuning back to work.

Does anyone have any experience of this in the workplace of dealing with this type of incident and can you offer any advice on how to go forward.

Suspend her from work on paid leave for as long as necessary to protect her health and safety, and that of her child

I'd say that this was a baseline requirement and I wouldn't start making any other assumption or plans until this happenend. I am surprised if she was back at work having a back to work interview before this was confirmed.

The GP can also advise via the 'fit note' what provisos would need to be in place to facilitate this. This would take the guess work out of it for you.

Simiular situation, I had a TIA 2yrs ago, driving ban was for 6 weeks. I had the TIA on the Wednesday night and started my new job on the Monday. I informed HR first thing and they didn't seem to phased. They asked why I was at work, I explained that I felt right just a little tired. Managed 1 1/2 days before I suffered from exhaustion and took another 2 days off.

So my point is, different people have different recoverry rates. My new employer didn't want anything from my Dr.

I also suffered two of these TIA's last year (2017), with 6 weeks off work due to a 1.5hr (each way) commute.

The doctors will have assessed her closely, she would still be signed off her work if they had any concerns and certainly wouldnt  be allowed to drive! I wouldnt have had any time off work (maybe a day or so), had it not been for the commute, where public transport wasnt an option. The stroke consultant was quite happy for me to work, just not drive.

I am sure everyone will be slightly different, however the treatment for this is straight forward. On the infor given, I dont see any reason why the girl couldnt be back at work.
