Hi Guys,
I have recently passed the NGC, I am wondering what I should do next. Are there any additional courses I can do to help boost my CV to break into my first H&S job? Maybe do the Fire & Environmental courses? I feel I should gain experience before going for the Diploma. Should I look at the IOSH courses?

Getting that break into H&S is the hardest element of the job hunt. My suggestion is to look at engaging with local businesses and perhaps offer to work as a volunteer (if you belong to a club etc. that may be of interest). That way you get the experience and can add to your CV. Having qualifications only doesn't make you competent in health and safety/fire risk assessment etc.

I have been doing risk assessments/ giving guidance to a local business and will be adding it to my CV. The IOSH managing safety course seemed like it wouldn't teach me anything new or anything I had not learned during study for the NEBOSH NGC course. Being already in full-time employment I rely on distance learning but find it hard to find a course.

I did the fire cert after my NGC, enjoyed it a great deal and if the oppurtunity arises I would love to specialise in fire safety. It took me some time but I found dragging out anything I had done in work or being able to show any trandferrable skills from my work and including this in my CV/ Letter of application helped alot. Aslo, I adapted my CV specifically for health and safety, making sure the key words we like/ use alot stood out to whoever was reading my cv. You may want to look at slightly more junior or split roles to start with the build yourself up.

Thanks for the info, I love hearing how other people work to build their career. I have been looking into the Fire Cert and I shall enroll for the course. In other news, I got my first job offer! although it is an hour and a half away and longer for traffic, but hey, you gotta start somewhere.
