We are looking at our situation with hot works and fire extinguishers and different clients require different things.

We are looking at 2no extinguishers present with any hot works. Do they need to be different types or can they be the same type e.g. 2 foam or 2 CO2 or should we have 1no foam and 1no CO2? (We have assessed the requirement for the type of extinguishers already).

Also is there any tool/advice out there with regards to the size of the extinguishers required.

Up to now we have followed the principal contractor requirement on site but recently found that one or two do not have a requirement so we would like to set our own requirement,

Thanks in advance for any support/guidance

I am not sure of exact tools or advice but I consulted with the fire specalists who maintain and service our extinguishers and they advised the 2kg extinguishers were sufficient.

Our hot works is mainly grinding and burning but on relatively small tasks.

I think the size of the extinguishers required would depend on the scale and size of the works you're undertaking.

Hope this helps.

Type/size etc. will all depend on your fire risk assessment, the activity beign undertaken, the location and the materials/equipment being used. There is not hard and fast answer hence why you have different client requirements.

HSG168 is a useful guide and INDG297, see links below:

Hope that helps.

If your hot work is being carried out correctly your extinguishers will only be needed for minor cooling down for example if a gob of hot metal splashes outside of your exclusion zone.  Extingusihers are not your primary source of protection from fire caused by hot works.   The best extinguishers for cooling are water and foam.

It is assumed that the hot work is being carried out under a hot work permit.  RC7, Recommendations for hot work issued by the FPA states that at least two appropriate fire extinguishers should be provided and also the people involved with the work or on fire watch should be trained in their use.  The fire extinguisher recommendation assumes that the jobs will be different and may require different extinguishers.

RC7 is available  as a free download from https://www.riscauthority.co.uk/free-document-library/RISCAuthority-Library_detail.rc7-recommendations-for-hot-work-interactive-pdf.html
