I have been asked various questions regarding the operatives carrying gas bottles in their van, either empty, full or partially used. What are the restrictions on carrying gas bottles, legally.
I'm aware of ventilation, driver safety, fire safety, insurance requirement etc. Is there limits on what can be carried in a certain type of vehicle, also do they need to be announced at various points, such as tunnels (as required by signage etc.)
I'm googling the life out of it but not really finding anything concrete to help me answer these questions.
Really appreciate any help on this one

Hi, I would suggest looking up if you are carrying enough gas for it to be classified under ADR. If so then there is then the drivers will need ADR licences and the vehicles will need haz plates, ADR kits etc. If it is under regs i'd still suggest ADR awareness training for your staff and fitting out the vehicle with fire exstinguishers etc. Might be worth contacting a DGSA for further advice.

Melissa, this is something we did regularly at the plant hire company I worked for and did so for many years without incident. We did however follow the HSE guideance when we put the procedure in place and I have copied a lik to the current version below. It says acetylene but covers other gases as well and there is a link to "small load" thresholds within the guideance as well.

Hope that helps

You first need to work out what you are carrying and in what quantities to ascertain if you are above or below the "Small Load Threshold" quantities; if you are above these quantities you will need full compliance with ADR Regulations.
British Compressed Gases Association has some great guidance on this with the following documents:
