A quick question ( 2 really) 1) If two construction jobs are independently happening on the same site with tw different contractors does one of them have to assume the role of principal contrcator (given jobs meet CDM criteria?)
2) On the F10 form it asks how many contrcators are on site. I'm assuming this includes the number of all sub contractors that will be on site during the duration of the project? not just the principal contractor? Thanks in advance Asif

Q2 = correct.
Q1 = There may be occasions where two or more projects are taking place on the same site at the same time, but are run independently of one another. Whatever the circumstances, it is essential that there is clarity over who is in control during the construction phase in any part of the site at any given time. Where it is not possible for one principal contractor to be in overall control, those principal contractors involved must: (a) cooperate with one another;
(b) coordinate their work; and
(c) take account of any shared interfaces between the activities of each project (e.g. shared traffic routes).
Hope that helps.

Unless the work s being done on behalf of a domestic client it's not for a contractor to assume any role it is for the client to appoint. If they don't then they are undertaking the role by default.

Thanks for the answers guys.
At the risk of sounding stupid, if there are two independent projects on one site simultaneously, can you have two principal contractors or does the client have to make sure that one of the contractors assumes the role of principal contractor?
In other words can the two jobs work independenetly on the same site at the same time with 2 different principal contrcators and two F10's being submitted?

Yes, if you follow my above comment which is taken out of the CDM regulationsn as you are in essence operating two sites within one area:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l153.htm
I would also recommend you engage a competent person to assist with the CDM element of works to ensure everything is joined up.

The way I see it, if they are both working on seperate projects and have been appoitned by the client for a specific projuect then they should each have their own PC. Also think contractally, how could one PC oversee the other project that had nothing to do with them?
It would be the clients respoinsiblity to ensure co-ordiantion and co-operation between the 2 projects. Morning meetings with the 2 PC's client & other conttractors would do the trick
