Hi

With regard to transporting asbestos waste ACOP 24 (Managing and Working with Asbestos) states:

533: Asbestos Wate should be transported in an enclosed vehicle, skip or freight container.

534: A suitable receptacle should be used to transport the asbestos waste to make sure that the bags, wrapping and packaging cannot become damaged or open up and release asbestos material or asbestos fibres during transit.

Does this apply to asbestos cement, or is it just for fibrous ACMs? Would it be reasonable to transport asbestos cement, double bagged and secured, on a flat bed truck?

Thanks

In terms of definition of asbestos types there is no distinction between the lower risk and higher risk withing the regulations and ACOP. Hence all types of asbestos are treated as hazardous waste, including locked in a matrix i.e. asbestos cement.

If you transport on a pick up and loose the load the cost could be astranomical. Check with your insurance company that they will cover transport of hazadous material in this manner.

Thanks for the answers. The asbestos cement is transported on the back of the flat beds in cages, however we will now remove the cages and replace with something that fully encloses the ACM
