We carry out training for staff to use Paslode nail guns. This has a renewal date on this. I have looked and there seems to be no requirement to renew the training every 2 years. these people use these guns on a very regular basis and I would deem competent. Is there then a need to re-qualify or is it just a money making scheme?
I belive that staff are competent due to initial training and the amount of time they use the equipment. plus we have zero incidents/near misses with nail guns?
I welcome other opinions/thoughts.

We use the manufacturer for initial training but do not conduct additional training
- poor use / abuse means the offending employee isn't present long enough on the tool to require refresher
- others as daily users are considered competent

Intitial training should be followed up at suitable intervals as determined by your risk assessment to ensure "poor" habits have not crept in. Your operatives might be using them all the time (which builds their knowledge and skills), but this is also when complacency can creep in.
There is no specified time requirement and the PUWER regulations are not that prescriptive. The two years stipulated by the manufacturer/provider are there for them, so that they are covered under the regulations and if you wish to undertake refresher training that frequently it is good practice.
Unless specifically stated in law, training should be undertaken at suitable intervals based on risk, frequency of use, competencies etc. Think fork lift truck, MEWP etc. training periods.

For operatives who have received training and are deemed competent one way of keeping training fresh could be to give short tool box talk as reminder of the safety aspect of using such tools, you could also use lessons learned from any incidents if there have been any
