The HSE website is down for “maintenance” but it is possible to log onto sub-sites like the HSE books site. This now has a new look and the option to download for free seems to have gone. Is this permanent state of affairs? Are the HSE trying to make money out of us?  Has there been any discussion about the implications of this? Has IOSH got anything to say about this?

I do not know if this is permanent, but with the cuts to the HSE budget and the appointment of a Business Manager at the HSE with the remit to generate commercial income I believe that it was only a matter of time before the option to download for free was removed.

HI,

I did a course at the HSL at Buxton about 18 months ago and was advised by the trainer to download as much as possible because it was due to stop at some point.  Maybe this is it.

Looks that way. e-books available through Amazon et al. A brilliant way of cintinuing to ensure that smaller and new start companies continue to be less likely to engage with health & safety. But hey-ho the HSE can always fine them when people die. So at least they will be profitable...

When you do go to the new site, you get asked to complete a survey about it (at least, I did), and one of the questions asks "what do you particularly like about the HSE website" and the answers on offer include that the guidance is authopritative and is free to download, so if the prospect of losing that alarmed you, it might be appropriate to slog through the questionnaire and tell them so...

As there is nobody in the role of Secretary of State overlooking the HSE as of 15 November 2018, there is less likely to be a major change affecting HSE policy until a new one is in post and prepared to authorise such a change

Speaking as ex Civil Service , when there is no Secretary of State is the BEST to sneak in things like this!
