Hello all,

A member of staff has collapsed at work today

due to a non-work-related illness (change of tablets for another condition) an ambulance was called. the employee is now home. my questions are

1. do i put the incident in the accident book?

2. if he is off for more than 7 days does this become reportable?

thanks in advance

No and No. It is not related to work and therefore not reportable

Personally I would put this in the accident book, with the record of the subsequent investigation clearly stating it was found to be not arising out of a work activity.

We had a similar incident, and the affected party managed to hit their head on the edge of something on the way down (generating some blood) and landed awkwardly such that they broke some fingers.  All recorded in the book but not reported, though in addition to the lost time aspect we had an employee with a head injury who had lost consciousness and some fractures (though actually fingers is not RIDDOR anyway).

I would put it on an accident form but clearly state this was not a work related event.  It does, at least, give you a record of it.

Yes and no.

1. Yes, to put in accident book as it happened in the workplace, regardless.

2. No, it was not work-related, so doesn't qualify as RIDDOR.

The accident book is to record ONLY work related accidents and ill health.

Yes, the accident book is for that purpose but let's be honest, if you need a record of what happened then why not use the same form - why reinvent the wheel?  The accident book is primarily required under Social Security Laws as well as RIDDOR and if the person has gone off sick as a result of this ill health occurring in the workplace, then SSP may be payable and so a record on this form will satisfy all interested parties.

You can clearly state on the form that this was not work related, but the accident book is not the Gutenberg Bible and it can be adapted to suit this event if you so wish.

You do not  need to use the offcial accident Book: i never have. Something bespoke for your workplace, preferably electronic is much better

Please correct me if I'am wrong, but it is my understanding that there is no requirement for an accident book under RIDDOR.
