Our industrial racking inspection has been carried out and 'amber' given to many of the racks that have been noted to have the safety pin (the pin that is hooked in place after the cross support is attached to the upright) located in the middle or top holes instead of the bottom one...

It is my understanding that the safety pin is there to stop the cross section, upon impact being able to be lifted up and unhooked from the upright.  Is there an industry standard that says which location hole in the cross section the pin should be?  I can't seem to find anything.  There are 4 holes in our racks, and the pins are located in all cross sections but the hole location varies and this is how they were installed.

Thanks in advance.

All racking systems should be of good mechanical construction, of sound material, adequate strength and installed and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Beam connector locks should always securely fix the connectors at the ends of each beam, to prevent accidental uplift of beams, e.g. by lift truck.

See link below to HSE guidance:

SEMA also provide useful guidance on racking installation requirements.

I am trained in inspecting racking systems.

Is it possible you can send me an image of the racking system you are using? as gennerally the one's I have come across, the retaining pin can only be inserted into middle. But im sure if it fitted correctly and does the job then there is no issues.

It would be useful to know the manufacturer of your racking system - most have explicit instructions as to where the locking pin must be fitted - some installation manuals state upper hole/slot, others have beam connectors which are designed specifically with one hole for the purpose of inserting the locking pin.

Always the bottom slot, learnt this on my racking inspection course but can't remember why and my notes aren't to hand. Check with the inspector they will be able to tell you why.
