Can anyone recommend an accredited fire risk assessors course (suitable for purpose built flats)

Do these courses have a minimum entry requirement i.e. NEBOSH cert level 3 , or would it depend upon experience.

Thanks

There are a number of suppliers of FRA courses, this is a situation where google is your friend.

FPA are good, Fire Service College is good, Vulcan, etc etc.

Theoretically by applying the information in the guide books - https://www.local.gov.uk...fety-purpose-built-flats - it is possible to do an FRA, however without some level of training it is doubtful that one produced in that way would be fully suitable and sufficient. You can buy prepopulated 'tick box' assessment forms but they are really only just ok for very simple premises.

Its only when it goes wrong that the authorities check back

Thanks for the info. If I was to go down the route of using an external contractor to undertake FRAs on standard two storey blocks of flats which are general needs, how much importance would I need to put on them having certification? I appreciate they have to demonstrate that they are competent but this can be done in other ways I.e. experience , qualifications, references etc.

Ideally the person would have done a number of FRAs before, and be able to produce copies for you to look at.

Qualifications are out there, the FRA specific courses as mentioned before, also NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management gives a solid foundation. Other providers courses will offer the same content.

If you use local contacts in your industry they will probably have a few names to look at.

We had the Fire  & Rescue Service visit our premises about an issue related to the next door building. I wrote the FRA, sent it to him and he asked for a few changes of terminology, which I compolied with and he signed it off as being suitable and sufficennt.

I was then happy that my thought process was up to standard and I was on the same page as responsible people. I only have NEBOSH Gen cert to my name but I'm happy to read BS9999 several times to get the info I need and the Fire Service is happy with my work. Do I need to go and get a FRA qualification now? I'm not sure that I do

I've completed the NEBOSH Fire cert, and I feel it gave me a good foundation to undertake Fire Risk Assessments in fairly standard premises( I think if you already have the general cert you only need to do FC2 and the practical unit, if you haven't, then you will also undertake NGC1). For anything more complex, I  would be inclined to have a more experienced assessor have a look. PAS 79 is quite a good basis for Fire Risk Assessments, and is used by alot of assessors as well as some of the fire services. I have heard good things about the FPA and also Vulcan for their risk assessors courses.
