Hi,

Need to put some signage on labs that contain carcinogens / mutagens and wondered what was the best one to use:

a) GHS serious health hazard symbol

or...

b) Carcinogen safety symbol ()

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited.

GHS08 Health Hazard as that will reflect the labels attached to substances and mixtures and is easy to comprehend for those not directly involved with CMR materials

After all the whole point of GHS is universally recogonisable signange

Scanning ISO 7010 the closest warning signs are

W009 - Biological Hazard

W016 - Toxic Material

I’ve worked in labs and the like for far too many years and I have never seen the ‘carcinogen’ sign. What is the point of putting up a sign which nobody knows the meaning of?  Myself I would put up a simple yellow triangle with an exclamation mark and the phrase ‘Warning Carcinogens Present’.  There should also be a mandatory/prohibition signs telling people what special precautions the need to follow  above and beyond the normal lab ones like don’t eat and drink and wash your hands before you leave.

Carcinogens are definitely not a biological hazard (That’s reserved for microorganisms)

This is not a workplace sign this the sign that is required on a product label under CLP.
