Hi I’m relatively new in the health and safey world and would like to start running some poster campaigns to promote health and safety in the workplace but have limited budget. Where/how is the best way to obtain posters? Many thanks

Make your own!

Have a look at some examples on the internet for inspiration, download free images via google images etc (preferbly open licenece and not copyright protected ones!), write your own captions, add your logos and voila! You can then print them, have them professionally printed, email them...whatever!

Take a look at the HSE website. There are some posters there that you can download and print for free. They don't cover everything but will get you started. Also have a conversation with some of your suppliers. Many can provide posters. again usually free of charge to their customers.

Take care as many workplaces have too many posters, old posters, irrelevant posters so your campaign may be lost in the noise and people may have stopped paying attention. I would suggest making sure it is very targetted and utilise alternative methods supported by posters, not relying on posters alone. Most people don't stand and read posters so they need to be simple, eye catching and clear on the message trying to get over.

Just to expand on my earlier reply, we did a survey on which safety posters people remembered seeing in the workplace. The resulst were as expeceted.

  • The locations they always remembered seeing posters were above the urinals or on the back of the toilet door.
  • The actual posters they remembered were the funny ones; People being pooped on by pigeons for psittacosis, master splinter (the rat) from Ninja Turtles for leptospirosis, various WWF wrestlers flying off ladders and through tables for work at height, early 1900's strongmen with some excellent moustaches for manual handling.... You get the idea!

It is not only the posters that loose relevance - it is the warning signs liberally scattered (after all these years do we still need "No Smoking" inside a UK workplace?)

I did an evening class at a college not so long ago and being new building it had an atrium. On the balcony bannister every 2 metres of so someone had put a little notice saying “Do not throw objects over the edge”. There must have been hundreds of them. An inspiring message but inspiring them to do what?
