Hi

We have just upgrade our light in our Workshop/Mechanics Garage area of the building as was wondering on what the LUX/Lumens levels should be as the workers in the area are complaining of how bad it is.

They had 20 fluorescent batten lights and we have upgraded to 16 LED batten lights. The electrician say they LED's omit a greater amount of lumens per LED fitting so we won’t need as many.

I have tried to find out suitable evidence online regarding the LUX/Lumens for the mentioned area but none that make much sense.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jamie

Relevant HSE documents are HSG 38 (Lighting) and HSG 129 (Workshop H&S which includes a section on lighting). I don't know if they are still in print.

both still available

100/200 seems to be the general guidance for workshops but in reducing the number of units there may be detriment to the overall illumination.
