Hi,  I'm hopeful someone can help me out here.

We have a couple of dust extraction systems in our school design & tech workshop. They are rather old and don't have any explosion vent panels in place. Is it necessary to have new panels retrofitted?

what does your DSEAR assessment say?

Essentially if the equipment is pre-DSEAR/ATEX (pre-2002) then is must comply with the regulations in place at the time of its manufacture/ installation...if you significantly modify it then the full ATEX complaicne applies..

For old equipment all you need is your Area Classification and an ignition source risk assessment...

Hi

You didnt mention what the the dust was and i am assuming in this instance that it is wood dust. If it is metal dust or some other dust such as plastic then a dust analysis should be conducted to identify the explositivity of the dust in the first instance, that is if the charcteristics of the current dust is not know or reference to such dust characteristics cant be found somewhere else.

If is this case it is wood dust then in accordance with BSEN 12779

.4.3.3 Constructive measures against impact of explosions To limit the effects of an explosion, filter, silos and any other closed storage devices with a storage volume of > 1 m3 shall be equipped with adequate constructive explosion protective devices according to EN 1127-1:2011, 6.5.

So if it is wood dust and the voluem is <1m3 then you will not need explosive venting.

Thank you both. That's been really useful.

The risk assessments for we already have in place for wood dust should cover what we have, as the volumes are not big.
