Hi,
Can anyone please give me some advice on career development. I decided to follow a path in H&S a couple of years ago and since then I have gained my NEBOSH general certificate, work related NVQ's in H&S stage 1&2 and a (TUC) Diploma in Health, Safety and Environment. At present I am a Health and Safety Rep. I can't financially stretch to doing my Nebosh Diploma and my employer won't sponsor me. As I am only a rep I have little experience in a full time H&S role. I have applied for a number of H&S jobs with no success.
Can anyone give me advice on any cheaper courses or qualifications I could gain that would help get my foot on the ladder of a permanent H&S job?
Also do you think the whole "union" qualification and rep job would put employers off?
Is voluntary work worth a shot?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

My humble opinion, for what it’s worth.
The Diploma is fine, if you have the time. With the wonderful internet e-learning is great. I am 12 months in and I enjoy it, however there are many other elements of my life that has had to go on hold. Don’t under estimate the time needed... NEBOSH offer a guide for each element, and you’ll use all of that.
There is the NVQ route which is great but it’s isn’t a Diploma. Without knowing your personal circumstances; would it be worth waiting, and saving for 12 months, gaining more experience as a rep’ and then do the Diploma?? Maybe better than doing a number of “less valuable” courses and not pushing you any further forward?

Hi Andy, sorry I cant offer a solution to your dilemma but I though I would add that you are in a very similar situation to myself and undoubtedly anyone else who has recently completed the TUC diploma, I managed to get hold of a number of NEBOSH ebooks (construction & fire risk management) and I now find myself spending as much time on study as I was during my TUC course but without having anything in concrete to study for.
I will keep a eye on your post to see what advice you receive,
