Hi there,
Could anybody help me? I am trying to find out how I decide which is the best company to use for setting up/auditing for the BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health and Safety accreditation. Is there an approved body? I am new to IOSH and thought I would try the forum! I seem to have looked through lots of websites.
Thank you.
Maggie.

Hi,

I think it is important to select an assessment body that is accredited by UKAS. I would highly recommend LRQA as they have a reputation as being firm but fair. If you have your certificate with them you have earned it fair and square, the same cannot be said of all assessment bodies even those that are UKAS accredited. LRQA have given us so many suggestions on how to improve our system, its been invaluable.

Just beware of any company that promises to do it all for you including certification in a short time scale. Done properly from scratch certification should take at least twelve months - this includes gathering the audit records and documentary evidence

My last employer used bureau veritas, I found them to be invaluable. I personally learned a great deal from the auditors. Firm but fair also.

You can find out which Certification body is accredited with UKAS by referring to:-

http://www.ukas.com/abou...-schedules-H&SMS.asp

The PDF's have got details of the industry sector the particular certification body has accreditation for.

Ultimately is it up to you to decide based on your budget and the cost of certification. As is the case with other things in life & business, the cheapest need not be cheap in the long run.

Please refer to the IOSH guidance, "Systems in focus: Guidance on occupational safety and health management systems" at, especially the "getting started" section:-

SGS UK Ltd can audit across 9001, 14001 and 18001, with pre-audit option and recommendations before certification audit, and reasonably priced if you negotiate.
Firstly though, I would recommend you engage an OHS practitioner who has experience of assisting companies set the system up. They may also be able to help you source grants for the costs in getting certificated
