Morning, I manage H & S for a building of 700 people, I need to involve the employees in H & S and find out if there are any risks that are not currently being managed. Does anyone have any advice on the best way to do this? Thanks Rachael

A survey? Or have certain staff in area's, floors or departments who could be pro-actively involved, and to promote good H&S practices. With the right people, given the training, they can be an asset. Hope this helps. Andy

I have a H&S section in our company newsletter. Also have staff from each department on the safety committee and find this a valuable way to pass and receive info/views, Carrickman

Rachael The 'Behavioural Safety Maturity Model' explained in 'Behavioral Safety. A Framework for Success', by Dom Cooper, CFIOSH can eanble you to interact adaptively to differences in needs and attitudes of managers and workgroups across an organisation of 700. Well-written, it provides guidance on baseline measurements that make it relatively straightforward to support sustained commitment to safe, high-performance wroking. It's avaialble from the publishers BSMS Inc. at info@bsms-inc.com.

Involve the managers first as that is an easier number to manage especially so because if the managers are not 'pro' to the idea the rest of your efforts are a waste of time Of the 700 people how many are mangers / supervisors

A good way to start and possibly start getting them involved, is for you to carry out an inspection of the building, which could involve speaking to a sample of them about what they know (e.g. location of first aiders and first aid room, where the fire exits and assembly points are, etc. Over time, you could then get them to conduct inspections of their own areas to get their involvement.

I would suggest inviting people who have an interest in H&S to a workshop, use audits and inspections and then consider getting people involved in completing H&S duties such as monthly inspections. Also set up a committee.

Morning, http://www.hse.gov.uk/involvement/ ...is a good start but we found the case studies on... http://www.hse.gov.uk/in...ment/doyourbit/index.htm ...quite helpful. Gives a good oversight of the usual involvement in walkrounds, committees etc. etc. Ian

We hold a Health@Work day once a year, we invite in outside agencies such as Lloyd's Pharmacy who will provide free blood pressure and diabetes checks, another example is the council run sports centre, the last time they visited they bought in BMI machines. We have also set up a "Well Being Campaign" our SMT have signed up to the local PCT for their charter, we hold quarterly events such as a healthy eating campaign were staff can receive dietary and nutrition information every week, its not a slimming club, however a lot of weight has been lost by our staff. Skin care is the next event before the summer, our staff are therefore involved with the campaign and enjoy the events.
