Again a new one for me to get my teeth into

A city centre wants cladding work done - however we will need to work nights as a bus lane need shutting down whilst we place mewps in the area to do the cladding works

The road is three lanes wide as such during the night the will be room to divert traffic around

this will take ten weeks so need to get permission of the council etc

I have never been involved into his type of work before so need all the pointers I can get

Thanks
Alan

It does sound like you need a Temporary Traffic Order which is normally applied for through your local highways department. You will probably find some useful information on signage etc in the Streetworks and Roadworks guidance. You may need to consider additional lighting as well. I am sure that others will be able to add to that. Good luck with the job.

At the earliest oppertunity you need to contact the Council Highways Section who will guide you through the process of applying for the closure of the bus lane. This does require a temporary traffic regulation order under Sectio 14 of the Road Traffic Regulations Act. The main reference document for the adequate signing and guarding of the site is contained in Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual which can be downloaded from www.dft.gov.uk.

it is most likely that unless you have competent people to set out the lane closures you will need the services of a traffic management contractor. Sometime, at a cost, the highway authority can do this for you.

Allow 6-8 weeks for the traffic order. The authority will communicate with the bus company and yourself for the closure (temporary suspension of the bus lane)...

As Phil has stated you will need to give appropriate opening notices (dates of work) to the highways, who has the required qualifactions NRSWA/LANTRA to implement traffic management?? if you have no one maybe consult with companies like A-Plant who will visit site pre-works to undertake a risk assessment and thenprovide the appropriate traffic management to comply and safeguard

May also require Plaanning Consent or variation for unsocial hours work. Best to check rather now rather than be served a "stop now" notice after mobilisation.
Working in deep shadow can be a significant risk - take care with th e lighting layout.
