Would ventilation ductwork that crosses a fire corridor need to have fire dampers fitted where it passes through the compartmental walls? The ductwork is not fire rated but fire resisting material has been used to make good the hole in the wall that the duct passes through. Also, I have heard that some fire authorities recommend that fire dampers are not to be fitted in ductwork so as to allow the duct to be used for smoke extraction. I can possibly see the reasoning for this in a vertical duct, but not for horizontal ductwork that could pass through fire compartments. Is anyone else aware of this or could I have misheard?

the question you have to answer is really about fire spread - do you think the fire would spread through this duct - or could an explosion occur which would put at risk other areas. The answers to these questions will give you the reply that you need.

Cannot answer for buildings - but on ships any penetration to a fire bulkhead must have an appropriate method of closing in case of fire. In the case of ventilation ducts these are dampers.

If a ventilation duct breaches a fire resisting compartment there must be a method of replacing the fire resistance.
If not a fire damper then what?
When you do install the damper make sure it's in the exact right position, as if it's not then there's no point having it at all.

Ducts which penetrate the compartment walls and floors must achieve the same fire resistance as the compartments through which they have passed.

Thanks for for your help on this, I was sure that fire dampers should be fitted where the compartments are breached, and stated so in my Risk Assessment. This is stated in HMGFRSA Section 1.11 and will discuss it with the client at my follow up meeting. If they install them is another matter!
