Reference is made to clogs utilised within the NHS operating theatres. Can anyone please guide me to which EU Standard do these clogs conform with?
Are such clogs classified as occupational footwear?
To my knowledge these do not conform with EN 20347

Hi Louismark
Where is this referenced?
The term 'Clogs' has been somewhat twisted over the years to refer to theatre footwear in general, rather than the wooden-soled, leather-uppered type of shoe we normally associate with this name.
Choosing the right footwear in theatres can be a thorny issue, with there being so many factors to consider i.e. type of surgery being carried out, are the shoes slip-reducing, protective, water (and blood) proof, washable, comfortable and supportive etc. but they should comply with the relevant standards.
Cheers.

Louismark, Clogs have been worn in theatres for the last thirty years. Is this the regulation you are looking for? CE - EN347-1

Louismark - are you making reference to the Alert issued by the Department of Health back in December 2010. This related to a certain manufacturers Croc style clog. If you go on to the DH website and type EFA/2010/012 in the search box this will bring up the alert and references. This may help you as it does refer to PPE and there are manufacturer contacts available.

Thanks for your assistance….
To note that EN 347 was superseded by EN 20347: 2004 – Personal Protective equipment – Occupational Footwear
In such Standard there is quoted that Design (5.2) shall conform to one of the designs in Figure 3. There are five designs in Figure 3 but the open heel / clog type shoe is NOT incorporated within…..
So my concern is, Do there exists another Standard to which open heel type of shoes and or clogs conform with to be used in operating theatres?
Or could it be that many years ago clogs were introduced in theatres as a ‘better’ alternative to what was used at that time and remained to date?
