Hello,
I am currently working on a project close to a domestic property which is heated by kerosene. The storage tank is 500 litres and is located away from traffic movements or any other potential vehicular issues. However the employer wishes to locate a mobile home within the same vacinity (no less than 6 metres) away from the kerosene tank. The risk assessment has been carried out. Please can anyone point me in the direction of guidance relating minimum distances between heating fuel storage and mobile homes.

Thanks

Hi B Ash,

As far as I am aware, there is no legislation directed at the location of mobile homes to storage tanks. It will come down to risk assessment. Bearing in mind that a domestic oil storage tank is usually a sealed unit with one inlet and vent and is usually dual skinned, there is unlikely to be a major risk of fire or spillage or indeed a build up of fume. The issue I would look at is if your mobile home is running of portable gas bottles, as gas bottles in close proximity to a flammable liquid like kero isnt the best situation.

Bear in mind that as the tank is a domestic one, the usual legislation regarding the storage of oil wont apply. The Oil storage regulations (although aimed mainly at the environmental impact) may provide some information. Safe working distances from oil storage are given in DSEAR and the oil storage ACOPS/ Guidance etc but they mainly refer to hot work.

The environment agency also produce a pamphlet called 'get to know your oil tank' this is a guide for domestic customers and the requirements of installing an oils storage tank.

Also you may want to consider the fact that a domestic oil tank will usually require filling every couple of months or so, that will mean a tanker arriving to fill the tank. You may want to consider what if any impact this operation would have on yours.
