Hiya Guys
Come on, someone out there must be able to help me or point me in the right direction. I have a query regarding sewage and I am trying to find the best way to deal with the removal of sewage from our two sites . (both pubs / restaurants). I have had a look at the EA and Defra websites which haven't helped me much. (clear as mud!)
We currently have two sites approx 12 miles apart. One of these sites has a septic tank on site and we are currently paying a contractor to remove the sewage four times a week from this site.
At the other site, we have taken out the septic tank and are replacing it with a treatment system that will treat the sewage so that it comes out as clear water at the end. This will then go into a soak away system on site.
At the first site, we have had a look at installing a treatment system but it does not appear to be viable as the soak away system would impede on other peoples land and would be extremely expensive.
So the MD’s thought is to buy a sewage carrier vehicle and train our colleagues so that we can empty the septic tank at one site ourselves and transport the sewage to the other site where we can then put it though the treatment system
I am trying to get an idea of what would be involved, what licenses we would need etc, how much time it would take one person to do (i.e. Would we have to employ one person to run this).
Also are there any other options that we have not looked at.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers KMS

Get direct advice from the Environment Agency. In my view you will need a permit under the water resources act for the septic tank discharge (note they do not discharge clean water, it should be treated as though it is sewage). To transport the sewage you may well require a licence as a waste carrier - regardless the duty of care under the EPA requires you to select suitable contractors etc.
Environmental regs are a nightmare! I suggest you start with an informal phone call to your local EA/SEPA office.
Hope this helps/
