Please can you give guidance on the best style of protective clothing for engineers/machine minders. There seems to be so many different views re cuffs, pockets, all in one, two piece etc.
Thank you in anticipation

Hi Pam,
Not sure what you mean by engineers. Maintenance, production, fitters, electrical, operators? Machine minders is a rather archaic term ! However,ANYONE who operates or works on machines that are running must wear close fitting clothing with no loose sleeves, ties, jewllery etc that could come in contact with machinery. From what you say I guess this is a production line that cannot be shut down and you are referrung to maintenance engineers?

One good reason for a variety of views is the diversity of task activities and measurements of equipment and machines as well as engineers, maintenance, prooduction, fitters, electrical, operators, etc.
The PPE Regulations and guidance were written from an ergonomic perspective to explain the variety of considerations a safety professional needs to take into consideration in specifying safe PPE.
Some of the presentations on the 'Food and Drink' Network of this website also present some useful photographs of appropriate PPE and you can obviously contact the presenters to discuss how they made their decisions in specific cases.

There is no 'one-size fits all' answer to this. Your risk assessment should indicate where and to what extent exposure is occurring (or might occur) and to what chemicals. Once you have introduced other control measures and are now dealing with any residual risk not controllable by means other than PPE, the selection of the appropriate protection will depend upon several factors, e.g.:
Chemical(s) involved
Extent, duration, frequency and location on body of exposure
Effect of PPE on the individual
Other risks, e.g. potential contact with rotating machinery, effect on dexterity, etc.
