Good afternoon,

I am looking for opinions on what additional course of study would improve my chances and position when entering into the oil and gas industry. I.e. which area of study would others see as most beneficial to potential employers to supplement an MSC and NEBOSH diploma in H&S. A qualification in metalurgy and corrossion, an electrical type of qualification, a mechanical type qualification or an other type of qualification.

It is a long term goal I have had of working in the oil and gas sector and I am deciding on these things as a five year goal.

Your views on this subject welcome.

PS (I wasnt too sure if this was a study question or a career but I thought I would put it in this section as it relates to a change of industry to work in.)

Rocky,
it may well be worth having a look at the Petroleum Open Learning website, they provide C&G distance learning modules over a range of subjects primarily aimed at giving the learner a broad understanding of various operations, processes and equipment used within the offshore sector.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, it depends a lot of what you want to do. A lot of Oil and Gas companies do very different things for example, we're manufacturers / suppliers and I have a PgC and NEBOSH diploma, which works well enough for me, no need for an engineering qual. The drilling etc side will benefit from having an engineering qualification / experience and just "basic" H&S qual. A lot of the jobs here may only ask for the NEBOSH GC but will expect experience (that old chicken / egg) and / or a qualification.

Behavioural Safety is starting to really take off, as is Occupational Hygiene if you want to stay H&S focussed. The world is your lobster with the diversity up here - geoscientists, chemists, metologists if you want the more involvement on engineering side......
