I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have been given a project of updating our emergency exit signage across site. My manager wants everything to correspond to BS 5499. When I have come to the emergency exit luminaires I am only able to purchase ones with the arrow down, left and right. BS 5499 states the final exit sign should be an up arrow (the down arrow is to indicate a change in floor level). Also the pictogram is different, BS 5499 shows the green man in the white door way, but you can only purchase a luminaire as the European standard ( white figure running toward the white door on green background) I have looked in BS 5266 the there is little information or picture of the actual design of the legend. Has the legislation changed? Why am I unable to purchase a luminaire with an up arrow? Am I correct in saying that the buildings existing emergency exit luminaires can stay as they are but new luminaires have to be to the new design (european) I would greatly appreciate any help offered or advice on where to find the information I need. Regards Graham Baines

Correct me if I am wrong folks but I thought that the HSSA has adopted the ISO 7010, which was based on BS 5499. Try searching for ISO 7010 signs instead.

BS 5499 is indeed being replaced by ISO 7010 and this should see the end of the 'euro' signs that the whole of the luminaire production currently uses. BUT who knows when they will get round to it, or whether they will produce anything other than the down arrow? Sorry to be so pessimistic, but the Fire Service have ignored this issue as has the HSE/LA inspection process where premises are supposed only to use one style of signage. martin

ISO 7010 is indeed replacing EC Directive (92/58/EEC) and BS 5499. ISO 7010 was at FDIS (final approval) last month so should be made available very soon. I have some general info (overview) if anyone wants me to send it please PM me your email address. I can also put you in touch with a local supplier of the latest ISO7010 signage if you let me know where you are located.

Just to confirm that ISO 7010 is now at publication status and has a target release date of 15-05-11.
