By any chance, does anyone know what the 'life' of a oil transfer hose is. The hose is about 10 metres long, about 2 inches (inside diameter) wide and made of rubber (I think) with a ribbed metal coil for strength. The oil being transferred is ordinary engine oil. The operator/contractor has stated that he uses them until they fail (no preventative maintenance program/pressure testing done). I taught that these types of had a shelf life of 3 or 5 years, or maybe I was wrong? Does anyone know of any guidance, BS Standard that could help me find the answer?

There probably is an applicable standard, but I'm not aware of it. What I'd suggest is to speak to the manufacturer of the hose and establish an estimated lifespan. You should also though introduce a visual inspection regime; the environment the hose is used in will probably really determine its lifespan, i.e. sharp or abrasive surfaces, vehicles running over the hose, etc.

Hi Tara, It's a bit difficult to tell from your description but it sounds like that is actually suction hose. It will probably have an SAE spec number on the outside. Can you find out if there is anything written on the hose that may be of help.
