How do you ensure the successful introduction of complex heavy manufacturing equipment into the workplace?

IITS: information, instruction, training and supervision. Get an expert with experience to deliver the training. Get an on-site champion to re-enforce the findings of the risk assessment. Have a range of picture and flow chart based work instructions.
Don't think of it a 'complex heavy manufacturing equipment'; break it up into manageable chunks.

Not strictly H&S but a good point to remember for your sanity. Have realistic expectations about the productivity of the machine whilst it is bedding in. Don't expect it to 100% reliable the instant somebody turns the key for the 1st time.
