Hi everyone who may read this Thought i would share with you a conversation I had at work and would like reactions and suggestions from anyone and everyone. I have recently started work with a compnay and the nature of this companys business means that certain individuals have to travel extensivley throughout this country and certain parts of europe. During the course of a conversation witha particular invidual he highlighted to me how many hours a day he can do behind the wheel. Driving from one client meeting to another. . . anything up to fourteen hours on the road soemtimes he said. Wow says I thats a lot . . . how much rest do you take inbetween . . . oh it depends really but I tend to rely on redbull . . . . ding ding ding alarm bells are going in my head . . . ok, so what is the driving policy of the company . . . blank expression. . . .im not sure we have one but I know when I have had enough and no matter where I am if my eyes start getting sticky I pull over and call it a day . . . . Yes , I know. I was gob smacked so I am in the process of getting this addressed howvere the cultural mountain i need to climb towards health and safety is on a level with base camp of everest so its going to be a battle. Iwould be interested to hear on the thoughts of forum memebrs how they implement controls of company personel that are expected to cover distances during the course of there normal working day

Here are a few suggestions: Your company's insurance company will have a driving policy template you can use and expand upon to reach your goals The recently added - Raod Safety Act - http://www.legislation.g...k/ukpga/2006/49/contents There are systems you can google to record the amount of hours people drive, including those for the new smartphones or their SatNav devices. The mileage records from the service logs will give you data on actual mileage. I fear the problem you face it that the employee's performance is pay related/bonus scheme, which doesn't help road safety. Once you know who your high mileage individuals are then you can prioritise your focus. There are many other factors to consider also, age, eyesight, driving licence checks, vehicle maintenance etc. What is the HR monitoring and Working Time Agreement arrangements? There are plenty of systems out there that can help, a company I used for vehicle supply beforehand (ALD automotive) have a very good road/driving behavioural safety company that works with them, perhaps give them a call for a meeting with your management team to conduct a review/proposal etc? Good Luck
