Have you done any internal audits? If not, then that would be the place to start.

Possibly reading the standard would help ! ( I'm not having a go this would really help you, especially if this has been dumped on you). It is not intended to be something you just do before the audit, it is a management system. You must have had an external audit in the last 18 months ?, as they are normally every 6 or 12 months, then a full recertification audit every 3 years. You should be conducting internal audits as noted above and have a continuous improvement process, being carried out and logged. ie targets / goals set and regular reviews of how they are going etc. You do not note which standard it is for :- ISO 9000 = QA, ISO14001 =Env and OHSAS 18001 =H&S. If it is ENV or H&S you need to do some extra bits to ensure you are complying with guidance / legislation etc.

The internal audits and Management review(s) will definitely help thus presenting them the corrective actions done and to be done with target dates. By doing this the external guys will surely understand that your company is on the trend for continual improvement. Better you and your internal team find most of the non conformities. Bear in mind the very first clause 1.1.a of ISO about statutory and regulatory requirements (health, safety, environment and others)
