Can anyone recommend a consultant, who they have used, to advise on a confined space issue. I'm looking for someone who specialises in this area.
Thanks

What's the issue philb? I'm sure with the wealth of knowledge among forum users someone will have the right answer for you without paying through the nose for a consultant. (apologies to any confined space consultants)

Phil, there are confined spaces, and there are confined spaces. Perhaps you can elaborate a little to enable someone to point you in the right direction.

The area in question is an underground plant room which is known to contain cylinders containing nitrogen at high pressure and other (as yet) unspecified equipment.
At present I have very sparse information, I have not seen the site and am working on second hand information. Apparently there is monitoring equipment fitted - but there is uncertainty over just what this kit is monitoring and a question mark hanging over whether or not it has been maintained.
I'm not a novice re H&S but confined space working is outside my practical experience - although I know enough to know they can be dangerous.
My plan at this stage is to go and look at the job and if there is any doubt whatsoever in my mind (which I think there will be) request a second opinion from a specialist - hence my original request.

Philb,
Couple of suggestions/thoughts:-
Are the cylinders connected individually or a number of cylinders via a manifold?
What is the purpose/use of the N2? (can it be isolated without process upset)
Access/egress arrangements? (Single means of entry/exit or more)
Calculate room volume and volume of gas in cylinder(s) capable of filling the room to determine is O2 depletion possible.
Remaining options are:
Enter and complete tasks wearing wearing SCBA.
Or
Enter wearing SCBA and isolate N2 cylinders for duration of the work carried out by another.

Should also state that provided cylinders are secured in position, and hard piped then risk of catastrophic failure is acceptable. Use of BA is based on top entry procedure being necessary with increased risk of supply tubing or hose failure and difficulty of immediate escape.

I did my CSE Management training at the Mines Rescue Service in fife Scotland and i cannot recommend them highly enough. The Emergency Arrangement planning within the company I work for was improved dramtically after my attendance.
