We currently have a consultant coming in on a regular basis to carry out asbestos awareness training.

Due to the nature of our business we have a high turn round of operatives coming and going.( Electrical contactors).

I am looking to carry out this training in-house and self certificate !

If i comply with the CAR 2006 Regulation 10, adequate information, instruction and training, would this be acceptable?

All advice welcome and training material relating to this.

Cheers

lee,

When the regs first came out we undertook in house training with my ex FM related company for engineers.

Produced our own powerpoint, training booklet and use of HSE dvd giving adequate information on the regs, their responsibilities and SSOW without huge expense with turnaround of people.

If the trainer also has sufficient knowledge etc as per REg 10 ACoP then, yes.

Note too that Reg10 also makes clear that annual refresher training should not be regurgitation of the original training, rather it should focus on topical and relevant asbestos related issues such as in-house procedures, outcomes from investigations, emergency procedures etc.
A repeat of the more formal elements of the initial training to ensure retention of prior knowledge could be extended to 3 years (say) and could be based on results from a small test questionnaire applied across the workforce?

I agree with Ron. Although I carry out this training, as a consultant, I always advise people that they are capable of doing the refresher training themselves by following the provisions of CAR 2007 Reg 10. Nothing in the Regs says you have to get outside consultants in.

Wouldn't there be a requirement for the OP to have either a teaching cert like PTLLS or at the very least have attended a Train the Trainer course?
Seeing as UKATA's accredited course states figures of 6 electricians die each week due to asbestos related diseases, i would ensure you are competent to carry out this training.

In my opinion an in-house course for AW training is acceptable provided that the checklist provided in Reg 10 is followed and the person delivering the course has sufficient knowledge of the subject ie a competent h&s practitioner with experience of ACMs and building work.

I have designed a bespoke PP and delivered the course myself to employees. I have also received previously AW training from a competent and licensed company. Therefore I am able to pass on my knowledge to others. I don't see a need for the deliverer to have any formal teaching or asbestos related qualifications. After all, this is about asbestos awareness for operatives...not the removal, surveying or sampling of asbestos products.

As long as the training is purely for awareness then yes in house can be useful for the annual updaters but, and it is a big BUT, I would be more wary with the initial training and the 3 yearly update. I have seen too many trainers who have relatively little practical asbestos knowledge having gained it all from books and training courses. If the industry provided the training in a better way to all then the problem of labour churn does start to diminish.
