My company have for sometime carried out function testing of handheld units for testing blood for diabetic patients, the testing was mainly electrical/electronic. A contract has been awarded where the manufacturer requires the equipment to have an additional test using blood sample supplied by the manufacturer and used by the manufacturer at our facility in the test process. The samples will be recived by post as will the handheld units and are extremely small glass phials with a very small quantity of blood. Have you had similar experience and can you offer any advice or point me in the direction of any specific H&S regulation regarding receipt, storage, handling and control of waste?

Standard laboratory biohazard precautions, personal hygiene, PPE inlcuding gloves, hand hygiene, avoidance of splashes to the eyes. Waste disposal Not a big issue. Take no less care if you are provided with 'screened' blood samples - treat everything as potentially hazardous

It is worth checking out whether you need to do anything as a result of the Human Tissue Act. See http://www.hta.gov.uk/
