Hi All,
I am currently employed by Solihull council. I am half way through my Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. Any advice on which training next and if any work exists in the birmingham, Solihull area.

Hi Dave1,
I Graduated from a BSc in OH&S in November 2010, I also have many other short H&S courses. It took me until Febuary of this year to get work in the H&S area and this was through years of trying i.e. endless applications through job sites etc.
All I can suggest is try and progress with a BSc, it will take around another year to gain this maybe less. Just keep applying and something may hopefully come up.

Hi Dave1
I would support sweenytodd's views that sticking in for another year and getting the BSc would be a useful option, as it will allow you to not only pursue a safety career but give you the option to enter graduate schemes in other sectors etc.
Having said that, any other training you can do to make yourself more appealing to a potential employer has got to be useful - training to a national standard as a noise assessor, vibration assessor or fire risk assessor would certainly be useful.
As has been highlighted in a number of other posts, there are many posts that include environment responsibilities, so unless you have a particular sector in mind that does not include environment, then you can't really go wrong studying this area.
Additionally there could be scope to gain a number of trainer awards, such as first aid trainer, manual handling trainer or fire safety trainer. These are all useful strings to your bow.
Not being from the West Midlands I regret am unable to offer any suggestions on the job front other than if you are not already employed in the H&S field speak to your own H&S team and seek some shadowing experiences with them - again you cannot go wrong building up such experience.
I hope this helps move your thoughts on, if you have something particular in mind I would be happy to chat it over with you.
Stuart
