Can someone let me know the purpose of two hooks on some cranes, especially mobile cranes. Are they used together at any point of time.

Slinging a load can be done in a few ways. Do you have a picture of what you are descibing?

It is not unusal to have 2 separate hoists on a crane, one will have a higher SWL capacity and as such will hoist and lower much slower than the other due to the size of the rope, drum and gearbox

One could be the main block and the other could be on a fly jib giving the ability to reach further but not able to lift as much load.

One hook, the smaller of the two is called the auxiliary hook, which has a lower SWL than the other larger hook. The aux. hook is used quite often for small lifts, whickh are most common. It is quicker and easier to use.
The larger hook is then used for heavy lifting. Both hooks can be used in tandem for complicated lifts, including flipping something upside down etc.
Hope this helps, although not my area!

Darach I could only agree with you up to a point.
Unless things have changed you could not use the one crane with 2 hooks for Tandem lifting as the crane only has one computor.
I apologise if things are now resolved on that issue. Going back a few years when putting up the Wind farms we hit that snag when using the fly jib hook and main hook there was a point when swapping from one to the other the crane computor could not register anything this was deemed to be unsafe so the practice was stopped.
As I said this is going back a few years so may have now been resolved.
