Good afternoon fellow IOSH members, Hi I'm Colin, I am looking into the possibilities of starting out offering a service providing office and factory audits for small business needs, carrying out DSE assessments etc. Can anyone offer advice privately to my inbox as to where i need to start. For example what standard of qualification is required, insurance and a business plan. I have experience of conducting audits and risk assessments through working for employers. I would like to try and go alone. any help from professionals would be greatly appreciated.

This seems to be a very narrow range of consultancy services that you propose to offer to clients. Depending where you are, you will be competing against probably hundreds of small one man band consultancies as well as the more established larger consultancies. What is your USP? (Unique Sell Point) - its a tough market at the moment, why should a client take your services rather than someone else's? Price/availability/particular expertise etc etc Is this a service potential clients will buy? Market research? DSE assessments are very easy to do, is it not better for individuals to do their own assessments, after they have been given sufficient information and training. How will your charge for you DSE assessments? By the hour or by each assessment? If I was running an office I wouldn't pay more than £10 per assessment. Bearing in mind that to be done properly your are probably going to have to spend 15-20mins with each individual. So at best I would think you would do 3 /hr if everbody you need to see is present or has the time to give you. For larger offices, you could give group training session, if employers will let lots of people away from their work. Maybe sessions of 10-15 people. DSE training takes about 1 hr max. How much would you charge for that? How many visits would you include in your fees? I speak from experience of being involved with a consultancy, that once had a contract to train and follow up DSE assessments for a government department. WHere something like 20000 people had to be done (not just by me!) Oh and the other thing - its very boring, doing nothing but DSE training and assessment - how will you feel after repeating yourself after 2 weeks, 2months, 2years etc Really can't see just mainly doing DSE training/assessments is going to generate much work. Certainly doubt you would generate much money. What standard would you be auditing against?
