What is the appropriate length of time for forlift truck refresher training? These are operators who use the vehicles daily and are currently re-trained every five years. The argument is that they are competant and this is demonstrated through behavioural safety records, accident and near miss reports and maintaining a log of operations to indicate use. Regards, John

John, We have a system of 3 years for refresher/assessment by an instructor and carried out on site instead of sending off to external premises.

For what it is worth John; we also try to get a refreshers done before the 5yr mark comes up. This can be sooner if there is an incident or reason to believe that the person would benefit from a refresher. The accreditation body that our provider is a member of however lets the candidates registration lapse off the database that they hold if they do not do a refresher within 3 yrs.

We do ours every 3-5 years. Don't think there is a set timescale? (sure someone will point out if i'm wrong) and i think the HSE only recomment the same. We also go down the route of they use them most if not every working day so if we felt they were incompetant we'd arrange an earluer refresher (we had to do this one after 3 months for a newly qulified member of staff)

I had reason to speak to an industry senior technical adviser a couple of years ago and he stated 3-5 years dependant on experience/use.

John if you look at HSE guidance my opinion is that you are doing it right at the moment. I would only add to that records of performance appraisal. My view is that external flt refresher training is one of the H&S rip offs. Many people do it instead of what you are doing above.

Talking to an HSE Factory Inspector a few years ago she stated (assuming there were no accidents/incidents with FLT's) that if you were retraining more often than 3 years it was probably too frequent and less often than every 5 years it was probably not often enough. There was no doubt left in my mind that we should be doing refresher training.

Please read p15 section 47 of the link that Phil provided, make your own judgement and be prepared to ignore the opinion of a single HSE Inspector.

Hi there Our refresher training policy is every 3 years - this is brought forward if there is an accident or someone is observed doing something they shouldn't!

Redken: Please read p15 section 47 of the link that Phil provided, make your own judgement and be prepared to ignore the opinion of a single HSE Inspector. I did read the link. Given the original question I felt the answer was appropriate especially given that the advice from the Inspector seemed quite reasonable i.e. giving us room to manage our affairs as we felt appropriate. I do not want to get into a heated debate over this however should you wish to comment further I suggest we do so offline.
