Hello everyone. I was wondering what the role of the h&s officer should be during a fire drill. Do they take charge of coordinating the evacuation or should they stand back allowing the fire wardens to do their thing, and simply observe and time the evacuation procedure? Thanks for your thoughts, Carrickman

Hard to say really... Is the H&S officer there most of the time, is his/her role written into the emergency evacuation plan? I'm not office based all the time so normally stand back to observe during drills, for real events I have assisted where I recognised problems due to an individuals lack of confidence without actually taking over.

IMO. The H&S officer should observe and evaluate the drill. Also, I would stand by the main entrance with a big notice with "FIRE" written on it. We found that people would invariably use the same entrance to exit the building during a fire drill. It made them think about final exits that were closer to their work area. This information was passed back to the work force, and we saw an improvement in evacuation times and a more even spread of final exits being used. Andy

We have an incident control officer (ico) and deputy's (dico's) glad I'm not one of those! To cover if the ICO is not in work, my role as H&S officer is to observe and give constructive feed back on each evacuation

I see the role as to plan, observe (and coordinate other observers if there is a lot going on in different places), time, report, and follow up the learning from the drill.

If the HSE Officer is the one planning and executing the exercise/drill I would guess his task must be to observe, evaluate and give feedback on how to improve the fire safety in the company/department etc.
