There must be others out there in the same boat as me. CMIOSH with experience of Logistics, Transport, Engineering and Manufacturing, Have worked in full time safety roles for 8 years but out of work since February this year. I keep applying to roles I think suitable for my skills and experience, with reasonable salary expectations; I have had some interviews but as yet not been successful. Questions - at what point do I give up and try to do something else? Has anyone been in this position? If so what did you do to get out of it?

Mark, finding work is tough in many sectors at the moment. All I would say to you is "don't limit your applications to only H&S posts". Apply for anything and everything that you feel you have a half a chance with. You can always return to full time H&S in the future. Looking at management skills, technical ability etc rather than simply focusing on H&S might highlight some other opportunities for you. I am sure many of us have had times when H&S was not the headline job. P48

Hi Mark I was made redundant in December last year (they at least paid my 3 months notice!). I too am CMIOSH and have over 15 years in the industry, with both HSE Inspector, consultancy & trainer experience. I perhaps was fortunate that I was successful in March this year but I found that the old adage of keep trying works so long as you target the right areas. Sign up to recruitment agencies (most are rubbish but worth doing). Try Yellow Pages for H&S Consultants etc. - I've done this twice in Australia and when I came back to the UK and have been successful both times. Google H&S jobs etc. regularly as not every website shows up - all to do with rankings etc. Consider a profile on LinkedIn - didn't do much for me but it gets you out there. Write spec-letters - again this has worked for me in the past. Really work on your CV, don't just send out a bog standard one, you must tailor it to each job. Think of the person receiving it as just one of dozens and then think how to stand out. Don't go daft on fancy paper, but a good heavyweight white paper shows attention to detail as does making sure you have no spelling mistakes!! Don't leave out any gaps in your cv/career. I for example have gone off travelling 2x and put this in as a "career break for travelling" as it shows a bit of initative/balls or sumfink! And keep positive, treat the job hunting as a job. Network where possible with a local safety group etc and best of luck!!!

Finding work outside of H&S may not be the answer or the simple alternative you may think. I have been trying to get a job using my transferrable skills for quite a while now with zero success, not one interview. The trouble is work is competeitive in ALL sectors and therefore if H&S is your main job then getting opportunities outside of H&S is going to be even harder than perserveering in getting an H&S role because you will be up against such a huge amount of people also applying for those jobs but they will have direct experience of that type of work. Sad but true. Work is tough in all sectors. The only thing you can do is plug away at it again and again. It'll happen but it can take quite a while. Chin up and all that. You're not alone.
