Hi,

Can anyone give me some on guidnece on this subject.

I have just completed an internal audit on lifting gear etc (man up cage, axle stands, trolley jacks, greabox lifts etc, etc). They had all be subject to an inspection by the insurance company and all was in order.

I was just wondering about load testing. The company had also had the equipment tested by a competent company.

If the lifting equipment had been inspected by the insurers and all was ok, then is load testing a legal requirement or best practice as a back up check...

any comments

Thanks

Ian....

Generally, the answer is no. Tests may be relevant at (a) no load, (b) operating load or (c) overload. Particularly relevant to equipment with moving parts and controls, or equipment which has been repaired.

HSE Guidance usually suggests referring to supplier data and recommendations.

I guess strictly speaking your Insurer's specialist engineers will have conducted thorough examinations, not "inspections".

When you say "The company had also had the equipment tested by a competent company" you need to be certain what the nature of that "test" was. Frequently this means no more than periodic maintenance, with no load test (which is often enough).

Ashley I agree with Ron

We too have inspections carried out by the Insurers and periodic maintenance by the Manufacturer or installer. By ensuring these two inspections are not one of the same thing you can save you money, time and duplication.

But it is important to ensure it has been carried out in accordance with the suppliers data and recommendations.

Good luck
