I have been asked to comment of the potential ill health effects to employees in the Mushroom Growing industry. My initial thoughts are possibly spores and inhalation of the growing medium (chicken fertiliser). A brief search on a well known search engine brought up lots of information about magic mushrooms and also health benefits to diners of mushrooms generally, but not much else. Can anybody point me in the right direction? Ta. Decimo (A Fun Guy - think about it!!)

Decimo As well as possible issues with the growing medium, you should also look at the potential for mushroom growers' lung, which is a reaction to the fungal spores. LB

Decimonal there has also been coverage recently about legionnaire's cases from compost - don't quite understand how this works in terms of aerosol spray etc but may be worth considering Brian

Did inspect a mushroom grower but it was years ago and so my memory is a bit ropey. The main thing that stuck in my head was that the discoloured and cheap economy mushrooms are tastier as they have been left longer until harvesting (the discolouration is just from water)!! Generally a fairly simple process - are they packaging as well, which would create manaual handling and machinery issues, as well as cold store issues? I suspect different mushroom growers use different processes though, the one I saw was fairly simple and hands off. I believe that they are allowed to discriminate against those with asthma or other lung conditons due to the problems associated with inhalation of spores. Where there is an associated health risk like that an employer can ask in advance of any job offer. Manaual handling issues obviously for harvesting. Slips and trips for damp floors is possible. Other than that I can't recall there really being many issues with it. But like I said it was along time ago.
