Just seen the article on 10 of the most bizarre health bans or restrictions spotted in media coverage by HSE over the last year. 1. Wimbledon officials citing health and safety as a reason to close Murray Mount when it was wet 2. Stopping dodgem cars from bumping into each other at Butlins in Skegness 3. Banning Royal wedding street parties 4. Removing an unwanted, bulky TV from a pensioner's home for recycling 5. Carnivals with fancy dress parades 6. Kite flying on a popular tourist beach in east Yorkshire 7. Stopping pupils from using playground monkey bars unsupervised in Oxfordshire 8. Using pins to secure commemorative poppies 9. Schoolyard football games banned - unless the ball is made of sponge 10. Just as an observation; I work for a local authority and probably as many other H&S professionals will concur, the "bizarre" application of H&S comes from those who either don't understand, can't be bothered to find out or by those looking for a "catch-all" excuse not to do something.
Some of those listed by the HSE do make me smile though :-)

Fancy dress parades banned! Oh no..what will Mickey and co do if this goes Euro wide?!
(though when I was a kid I near enough collapsed from heat exhaustion after donning my Dad's full firefighting gear including slickers, HEAVY jacket, helmet and boots that were about 10 sizes to big for me. I then walked about a mile through the streets of the village in temperatures up in the late 20's....did collect loads of extra "pocket money" though collecting money in the helmet as I walked round so had about 6 ice lollies afterwards!)
Ah, those were the days....

Do you honestly believe this story? A colleague of mine, a Daily Mail reader does - very sad. I suspect they are the usual mix of fabrication, distorted truths and taking things completely out of context to enjoy an indignent mocking of H&S or tiresome rant at the 'Nanny state'.

Max, I appreciate this the HSE and BBC rather than not just the Daily Mail but not quite sure how these links provide convincing evidence - evidence that is not policital or sensationalist driven? Plenty of daft decisions are made in the name of H&S but I am not convinced by many of these stories - especially the dodgems and Wimbledon. Wimbledon management were reported as being furious with HSE for not speaking with them to find out the details before publishing their open letter. Dodgems - No Bumping. Those signs have been about as long as I can remember. Also, ride operators seem to allow a reasonable degree of fun bumping as long as I remember. The signs give them authority to deal with mad aggressive dodgem drivers!
