Had an employee who tripped and braced his fall with his hand. This resulted in a fracture to his scaphoid bone. Does this constitute a major injury under RIDDOR? i.e. I'm not sure if this is classed as a hand bone or not!

The scaphoid bone is one of the carpal bones of the wrist and is situated between the hand and the forearm on the radial side of the wrist.
As such i would class this as reportable.

Would it not be reportable even if it was a hand bone...?
To quote RIDDOR all fractures are reportable "other than to fingers, thumbs and toes"
As this bone is not a finger, or thumb, bone it is reportable.

Schedule 1 of RIDDOR defines a Major injuryas “Any fracture other than to fingers thumbs or toes” – and fracture includes a break, crack or chip.
So in answer to your question – Yes it does need to be reported as a major injury

I took advice from the RIDDOR helpline following a similar accident and they were clear that we should report it
